My Final Black & White Logo:

My 3 Colour Versions:

Artist Statement:
In this piece of work, I wanted to represent two cultures that made me who I am today; Japan and Dubai. My grandparents live in Japan and I travel there every year ever since I was a toddler and have grown up there. I created the Burj Khalifa using the pen tool to make a silhouette. I wanted to make the building one colour so I chose to do a silhouette instead of details as the logo design I was going for was a simple design. I chose to do this building because it strongly represents Dubai and it meshed well with the shape of the letter N, becoming the vertical line.

For the letter N, which is the initial of my first name, I picked a graffiti font for the logo because the connecting area of the N looked like a tree branch. The font fits well with the theme of turning my letter into a sakura branch to show the Japanese culture side. I chose the sakura flower because it is an important part of Japan to me. When I went during the spring, I got to see the cherry blossoms in their bloom and it was the most magical experience because most of the trees were pink and made Japan look ethereal. Its a precious memory and also represents Japan as they are quite well known for the cherry blossoms.

Portfolio

Artist Statement: I tried my best to keep my portfolio as neat looking as possible and kept a colour scheme that is easy on the eyes; black, white and red. For the front and back cover I used pictures of Japan as they are aesthetically pleasing and related to me. I tried my best to separate my work and make it as big as possible so that it is able to be seen. I kept the artist statement/most of my text on separate pages. I made sure to organize the layout properly so that the texts weren't next to each other and made sure it was kept in order of when we did each assignment. My favourite page is the logo page where I formatted it to look like a professional brand guideline page and it took me very long to lay it out the way I wanted it to. If I had more time, I would try out some different fonts and make some pages more interesting, but overall I am very proud of what I made.

Indesign Tutorials

The first video I liked the creative design that was taught as it will be relevant to class and the creation of business cards. I like how he played around with different formats, and the one thing that stood out to me while he was explaining was the way he tried to put the image inside the text. Learning how to do layouts like this will be helpful, especially with the way the images are placed and how the colors match the overall theme. I like the professional look of the black and white with the pictures placed artfully. The column tool is very helpful in this tutorial. The pop of yellow showing up from the black and white is very eye catching and a good design idea. In this video, the layout ideas given using full page photos with text as well as the formatting of headings, body text and pictures in general were really clean. I like the way the guy uses the rectangle shapes to mimic a magazine and use it next to the body text.

Tagbrush

Artist Statement: For my tagbrush I traced my black and white logo outline as carefully as I could to include as much detail in order to make the stamp on the spray image look as close to my logo as possible. I wanted the image of the Burj Khalifa to be recognizable. I chose the colours dark red and pink for the stamp overlays to create a boldening effect and make it look 3D compared to flat on the surface. I think to improve this I could have added the circle in the middle of the flower so it would look cooler.
